Is it time to bury my lucky hat?

History – It’s at least 12 years old, a fitted “The Franchise”, it’s faded & torn. It’s been to Cubs games at Wrigley, Stl, Atl & Cincy. It’s traveled to Hawaii & been to other countries. It has been pampered, it has been thrown in anger. It has paint spots on it, wearing holes in several spots & the Cubbies haven’t won a World Series in my life time. is it really that “lucky”

I gave it a rest recently & wore a hat someone bought me 2 years ago w/ fake wear & tear… the Cubbies rattled off 9 in row w/ that hat on & when they finally lost, i decided to give old faithful the start, only to get a loss.

Is it time to bury my hat?

This is a great question, one I’ve thought about all morning while painting my daughter’s bedroom.

Cubs fans have traditions steeped in mysticism, bordering on the occult at times. I can’t pretend to fully understand the gravity of the Curse.

But, it occurs to me that your hat might just be a talisman. The difference when opposed to a ‘charm’ is that a talisman is designed to protect its owner.

Your hat has served you well, and may have less direct influence on the outcome of games, beyond buffering you emotionally, and keeping you dry and paint-free.

Were you wearing it during the Bartman incident?

I would not bury the hat. I think it is interwoven into the fabric of the Curse, and should be afforded continued good mojo. A simple shrine might be in order.
