Time Champs Wool

God's Warriors
Megan Nolan emerged from the bowels of the subway station Abbesses Montmartre on a cold, raw afternoon in January 2001. More oil and colder, it seemed to her that when he entered the subway near his apartment in the Latin Quarter just twenty minutes earlier. To catch her breath, she lit a Gauloise and stood near the entrance to the station deck. A businessman is going to look slow as he stood up and smoked. His strawberry blond hair down on the shoulders of his dark green coat, wool au courant, which in turn flowed to the top of the knee high boots from Prada. In the shelter, which was in jeans and a faded ivory turtleneck cashmere. She does not wear jewelry in Montmartre, as he had heard stories about the sudden overthrow and collar-or worse yet, not yet spoon of marauding children. His hair and gold, dotted with green eyes were his best accessories anyway. She did however love jewelry, use and sell, right by which it was to see her friend Annabella Jeritza, the gypsy fortune teller widow, whose shop was just a few blocks, near the little dark Olney Park.
Bordering the Square Jehan Rictus, with its wall ridiculous Je T'aime – a mass of blue tiles with stylized I Love You in many languages written on them – Megan headed east in the Rue Yvonne Le Tac, whose name always made her smile because Yvonne Taccopina boyfriend had stolen in high school and then broken heart like a dead branch. E Yvonne is too much in the deal. In her purse was a white gold, heart-shaped pendant in its original box Raumet velvet, gave him for Christmas by their current boyfriend, Alain, whose father owned Raumet chain. This Annabella would find a buyer and receive a commission of ten per cent. At Harry Winston Megan had yesterday located a similar pendant at a price of $ 7,800. It is expected that the gross proceeds of $ 2,000, which would add to your account with Pictet & Cie, the Swiss private banker on the Avenue des Champs-Elysees.
Alain, without doubt, in the end you wonder why they had put on suspension, which would give an opportunity to say that she had decided what and when, not him. She could sell if he wished, could not it? Or was it a gift with strings? Alain, who was agile and sensuously beautiful, and unconscious sense of superiority which emanated from every pore of his era, when it was said and done, the child twenty-four years old he could – and – be easily carried to heel. Only three more years, Megan felt old compared to her new lover, too worldly for its own good. Not a good feeling, but there was, and had all the money from dirty Alain, its very real charms sex, and of course the jewels of his father.
As Megan walk along the Rue Durantin, was observed for lost children, prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers and pickpockets – The flower of life under the Paris – hanging in and around the bars and greasy spoons that lined the avenue. Bearing Holding tightly to her purse, her natural pride and erect making it look taller than his five feet seven inches, threw his hair the challenge, and moved with seeming indifference by the carnival that is Montmartre, especially on market day when the tourists came in buses filled to be victims. At the corner of Rue Caulaincourt, he met two prostitutes whose composition gaudy and fantastic dress she had worn in a story about whore chic that editors at Cosmopolitan had bought thinking they were something new in the world of fashion. The mother and daughter team named Marie and Michelle had been a staunch with pride when Megan photographed and gave them $ 50 each for the history of their "personal rights and image.
Megan stopped to chat, as did notice, the girls' pimp, a large muscular mulatto called Sky, watching through the glass window of the pizzeria on the corner. It was the sky that had taken girls hundreds of dollars and signed their names to the press that Megan was in her purse all the time. Sky had beaten her, and Megan's smile in response had not been a complete dismissal. Then he had a point to go through the pizzeria – Office Sky – chat it up. An elegant and attractive man of about thirty five, with short hair and amazing blue eyes, no, Megan went to bed with him, but in another life you might have. His instinct, however, – the instincts of a single woman whose only protection was his wit and guile – said that a man worth knowing, if only to have a friend in the jungle of Montmartre.
On the next block, Megan became a lane that led to a weed-covered ruins of the courtyard that served several apartment buildings six-story Durantin street and the street behind him, including Annabella. In good weather, sometimes found in the yard of Annabella hang clothes or sitting drinking tea gypsy women with her friends, some of whom were young mothers watching their children play. Megan, beginning at the age of sixteen, was well aware of envy and jealousy he aroused in other females. His eyes were dipped brushes in fear and hatred. Annabella friends – Gypsies in the bone – was painted with the hottest of the colors. Although he was allowed to pass unhindered because of his friendship with the old soothsayer, she was not expecting to have to deal with any gypsies on their way to the entrance back to the store Annabella. At the end of the lane, slowed and stopped behind a rusty container to inspect the scene ahead. Relieved to see the empty courtyard, was about to step behind the dumpster when he saw Annabella glides through the rickety wooden porch at the rear of his building and through the three steps to extensive land and twisted in the weeds in a naked line of clothing.
Before Megan could react, the son of Annabella, a dark and arrogant that Megan had seen once or twice on the psychic shop – reeking of alcohol every time – left the back door, through which he obviously had thrown his mother. When he arrived Annabella who was trying to climb and he helped her by grabbing her hair orange rope and lifting and turning to look twice before beating her in the face with a full arc right and backwards, the back shakes her loose from her grip and calling back to earth. Annabella lay there, inert, painted on her cheek resting on an old magazine – That seemed to Paris Match to Megan – as her son leaned over to say something before spitting on her and turned to go back to the building.
Megan took a step to Annabella and then stopped, as her friend leaned on one elbow and began arresting the taps long cotton skirt around the legs, which, like bats and wearing stockings rolled to just below the knee, had been exposed almost to the waist when she fell. In the old gypsy profile, Megan could clearly see the mark hand contours on the right cheek, his tone deep red by the second so that seemed to have been painted on the side of a suit or a ritual. Megan recalled – It for a long time – the cloud of carmine which had arisen as Annabella wrinkled face each downward stroke of the right hand of his son, landed with a thud, like a whip lash. Megan remained in place, only their eyes visible above the upper edge of the container, and saw Annabella slowly crept their feet. Search in the ground, trying to maintain balance, the palm reader saw something old and then bent to retrieve the colorful headscarf that she wore at all times in the head. Holding in his hand – the pins must have flown away – walking unsafe, but not without dignity in the building.
* * *
Eight months later, near the end of a hot day in early September, Megan was in the filigree of wrought iron fence that bordered the grass pitch of L'Ermitage International School in suburban sheet Maison-Laffitte, west of Paris. Through robust bars of the fence, could see a group of middle school girls, eleven twelve years old, playing soccer amid the lengthening shadows cast by the chimneys in the vicinity of the seventeenth century castle that gave the town its name. Girls all wore the same black shorts and Nike sneakers, computers differentiated by the colors of their L'Ermitage-printed T-shirts. The girl who was interested in, Jeanne, had set for the green team. Megan did not know the result as reached by the middle of the game and there was no marker, but I knew the goal was important for Juana the way around her colleagues shortly before the creation of joy after the kick-off.
An older girl, a freckled blond American in for about sixteen or so in a smart blue skirt, striped top and the ubiquitous Nike, was doing the dual role of referee and scorekeeper. When breathed the whistle to end the game, as Jeanne Megan leaned past fifty feet of the fence as he made his way through the handshake after games line. With her jet black hair and dark, Jeanne did not look like the other girls, but his face was red and the brightness of his dark, piercing eyes – his team to Apparently he had won – spoke of a happy child, his place in his little world secure. Megan knew that this had not always been so.
The girls gathered their equipment along the outside and went in groups of two and three at school. Megan Jeanne watched until the last possible moment. No one had noticed her watching game. And certainly, no one knew who had contracted to fund tuition Jeanne L'Ermitge, seven days, twelve months of internship, to the end of twelve years, a sum that eventually exceed the $ 90,000. Most of this money had already been extracted from the by now hopelessly in-love-Alain Tillinac, and I has given special instructions to Pictet & Cie
In the short train ride back to Paris, Megan watched the small towns and rolling down the field for a time and then the images of a happy and healthy Jeanne fresh in his mind, he could remember their first meeting and, finally, with the child, who was at the time chained to a dirty bed in the back of an apartment in a housing project in the Paris suburb of Florentin.

"We her man, "Sky had said over the phone, which will address." Do not delay. "In thirty minutes she was there. Boiko Jeritza was also there, sitting in an armchair in a dark room, closed her gagged, hands tied behind his back. Boiko wild eyes as Sky continued into the kitchen dirty when showed him the photographs, sixteen in all: of children – boys and girls – naked or half naked, some with sadness pose, some have relationships sex with men. One man was Boiko. In the same folder that the photos had been held was a list of customers, some highlighted in yellow, some with numbers euro, next to their names and addresses. Before Megan could speak, they heard a noise in a back room and there they found Jeanne.
The plan was Boiko to frighten into submission, but Megan is now believed he was dead. It was, in fact, I bet he was dead. She had gone to visit Annabella half dozen times since then, and is not Boiko once. Two weeks earlier, he took courage to ask the gypsy child. They were drinking tea with whiskey, one night in the back room Annabella. Gypsy's face had healed but occasionally Megan would slightly brush the back of your finger across the cheek or the other. Annabella had left the cup on the table covered with oilcloth, among them, and said: "He is in hell."
"In hell?" Megan had requested.
"With Satan, it belongs to, and can do more harm"
"Is he dead?"
Annabella smiled before respond, Megan looked into her eyes for a second or two. A long second or two.
"Yes, but you know he is," he said finally.
It was Megan's turn to be silent. Disappeared, vanished, does not mean dead. She was the fishing? The link to confirm your suspicions? Or is she, as Megan increasingly believe would have the second sight that Gypsies spoke of silence and revered?
"How did he die?" she asked, finally, to look at her friend with equanimity. He had survived the last nine years on his own in Europe and Africa, giving the cards away.
"He was slain by Saint Michael, the archangel."
"In its application?"
"Using instruments on earth."
"Annabella, you're scaring me."
"Warriors of God is not always apparent."
Megan sat on the chair and shook his head slightly. Sky had gone for a while too, but he soon returned to his office at the pizzeria, with its beautiful eyes prostitutes and their clients. I had asked two thousand euros, of expenses, but seemed unchanged, its usual breeze and threatening it.
"Who are they? "she asked.
"I do not know, but once you are elected, they are apart. They have one foot in another world."
Megan chosen his cup and took a sip, feeling the fire in the throat when swallowing Annabella mixes, hot and soft as the Gypsies themselves. His steady hand as the cup is replaced the table, his normal heart rhythm.
* * *
Megan was still in her dream as her train approached the Gare de Montparnasse. Once are chosen, Annabella had said, they are separated. It would be one thing to have a conscience, bad enough, but to be elected? To be saved? She shuddered at this thought. Sky had been elected, not her. He did not care did not like herself. What was that like? It was like herself, or rather try to behave so that to create this feeling that tormented her. That would mean the end of her life as she knew. There was Jeanne of course, but it was a special case. A child so abused a young woman without family, had to be helped. She did not even know his name and not wanting to know. Heaven, and its bankers, had made all arrangements. There made the voyage to the Maison Lafitte-curiosity, a natural curiosity in the circumstances, but never see the girl again.
In his recent visits to Annabella the woman took Megan's hand, occasionally turn around and rub your thumb on the palm as if to erase the future he saw there. Yes, but you know he is, his friend had told him, and Megan had not denied. Maybe it was in the pay of the store for his role in the disappearance of Boiko. How ironic that she should be punished for only one act.
Megan smiled at this thought. Cause and effect and the moral was not his cup of tea. Tomorrow was going to spend the day with Alain at the Ritz, it was his birthday. Alain be tolerated for a longer time. He was very handsome and very energetic. Why no? Off the train whistles as it reached its end seemed to emphasize this idea. Why not? Nothing need change, nor will be.
