World Series Linedwool

Wednesday was a good night for the Philadelphia Phillies. They defeated the Los Angeles Angels 10-4 in game 5 of their series. The result: A second straight National League title, and a second straight chance to take home the biggest title in baseball aE” the World Series.

The defending champions will face either the Los Angeles Angels or the New York Yankees in the big event, depending on the outcome of the ALCS series. The Dodgers didn’t have a chance against the Phillies, who took four of the five games in the series.

Philadelphia displayed its clear advantage in its three wins before the big victory at home on Wednesday; even Joe Torre wished the best for the Phillies, who have proven their solidity and talent as a team. The Phillies spent the night hitting off of 2008 World Series MVP Cole Hammels, who seems to have lost his edge. Los Angeles had closed to 9-4 in the eighth, but Ryan Madison managed to strike out Russell Martin and retire Casey Blake with a grounder, avoiding a high-pressure mess with bases loaded. Jayson Werth hit two homers, while Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz each claimed one. Ryan Howard was chosen as the NLCS MVP.

After beating Tampa Bay in last year’s World Series, the Phillies are now aiming for their second title in a row. If they can pull it off, they will become the first repeat champions from the National League in over 30 years, since the Cincinnati Reds in the 1975-76 World Series.

The Yankees were the last team to win consecutive titles when they captured three in a row from 1998-2000. Now the Phillies, along with their coach, Jimmy Rolling, are perched at the edge of their benches to see which team they will face in the World Series. The Yankees are leading the series 3-2 and hold a good chance of winning, although the Angels rallied during their game 5 victory Thursday night.

The World Series will begin next Wednesday, and the Phillies are already preparing themselves for the upcoming challenge. “A lot of times we win games just because of our power and the fact that we can hit the ball out of the ballpark,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “We need to be a little bit more consistent, and I’d say we can be a better hitting team. But right now for the National League, I think we’re outstanding.” So did everyone else on Wednesday night. The celebration was monstrous; Philadelphia players pulled out hats labeled while fireworks exploded behind them, just barely drowning out the screaming, chanting crowd.

The players retreated to the clubhouse where they celebrated with plenty of champagne. The Dodgers, on the other hand, left Philadelphia empty-handed, a bitter taste in their mouths. They had boasted the best regular season in the MLB, but couldn’t overcome Philadelphia’s power hitting. The trip will be Philadelphia’s seventh to the World Series in 127 years. The Phillies entered the series but lost in 1915, 1950 (when they were swept by the Yankees), 1983, and 1993; they won in 1980 and 2008.
